Ways to Lower Your Cholesterol Naturally

Heart disease is on the minds of many of us, especially as we age. What is heart disease, how can I prevent it, what is high cholesterol are just a few of the questions you may wonder about. If you or someone you love suffers from high cholesterol, you may wonder if there is anything you can do to help lower it. While our bodies need cholesterol, having too much of it can contribute to serious or even deadly health conditions, including coronary artery disease and cerebrovascular disease. Managing and or lowering ones cholesterol is proven to help prevent these diseases. While medications do exist to help lower cholesterol, there are also lifestyle things you can do to help lower it naturally. Top of the list? A proper diet.

  1. Eating to Lower Your Cholesterol: Experts recommend eating lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts. It is also recommended to limit one's intake of animal products, particularly red meat and processed dairy products. In addition to what you eat, studies are showing that intermittent fasting can lead to significant weight loss and lower LDL and total cholesterol levels.

  2. Exercise: Cholesterol is made up of two types: LDL - "bad" cholesterol - and HDL - "good" cholesterol. Exercise can help raise one's levels of HDL cholesterol. While research is needed in determining what types of exercise are best for lowering cholesterol, some research suggests that yoga may be the best at reducing cholesterol.
